Goddard Speaks: Statement on Eric Garner

On July 17, 2014, 43-year-old Eric Garner, an African-American husband, father and grandfather, died after NYPD officers held him in an illegal chokehold during an arrest. Yesterday, the grand jury in Staten Island decided not to indict the NYPD officer involved.

In the last few weeks, our nation has been challenged to look deeply at our justice system and find better solutions to keep our diverse communities safe places to live and grow. As an organization deeply committed to justice, racial equality and fair treatment to all, Goddard Riverside stands with those who are peacefully seeking answers and accountability. Tonight at 5:30 p.m. in Manhattan’s Foley Square, members of our staff, community leaders and neighbors will join together with the NY Civil Liberties Union for an organized protest march in response to the grand jury decision on the Garner case.

Goddard Riverside Community Center will continue to stand for justice, liberty and equality…for all.
