Options Center to Prepare College Bound Students and their Counselors During NY College Application Week

Goddard Riverside’s Options Center will host a series of trainings, workshops and special events during New York College Application Week, which takes place November 17 – 21, 2014. Across the city, community-based organizations, high schools and other agencies will set aside hours to help students identify the right institutional fit, draft essays and gather the required information for completing their applications.

In addition to direct work with students, the Options Institute will host professional development workshops for counselors, advisors and volunteers who work with them. Options’ training and workshop schedule for the week will include:

November 18, 19, 20: Strong College Applications (for NYC Department of Education counselors and other school staff), held at Church of St. Paul the Apostle, 405 West 59th Street
November 19: Training for Capital One volunteers: How to Create Strong College Statements
November 19, 20: Strong College Applications (for college advising professionals), held at Options Center, 352 W 110th Street
November 20: College application workshop for students and parents, held at the Bernie Wohl Center, 647 Columbus Ave. (free and open to applicants starting college in fall 2015)
All week: Options staff will be responding to parent and student inquiries via the Ask an Adviser tool on the NYC College Line website(www.nyccollegeline.org). All questions will receive responses within 48 hours.

On top of its local activities, Options will be represented at the White House College Opportunity convening, November 17-18, which takes place at the San Diego State University. Deputy Director of Options, Judy Lorimer, and Director of Training, Deborah Fuller, will join this invitation-only gathering of committed leaders and commitment makers focused on improving school counseling preparation, programs, and practices with the goal of increasing college access for all students. Judy has assisted in organizing this national event and will facilitate a portion of the conference.
