John Oppong, Jr., grew up just north of Yankee Stadium in the Highbridge neighborhood of the Bronx— “A community that was supportive to students, but it was also a tough environment to find your way and balance life in,” he recalled. With a little help from our partners at the Isaacs Center, he’s poised to get an advanced degree that will open doors anywhere from the Financial District to Tokyo.
Oppong first won an Isaacs Center scholarship to help him go to NYU as an undergrad. Now our continued support is helping him get a graduate finance degree at CUNY’s Baruch College. He was first exposed to the industry through an apprenticeship program: “It was really thrilling and it made me see that there was an interest I had as well as a capability to do the work.” He plans to become a financial analyst, possibly in a role related to his other interests like media and entertainment.
Scholarships from the Isaacs Center and Goddard Riverside help more than 30 students a year pay for college and grad school. These awards provide flexible funding; they might help pay for books, or a bus ticket home for Thanksgiving, or food. Crucial expenses like those often aren’t covered by traditional scholarships.
