Woodland Nymph

Woodland Nymph, 2020. 13" high x 14.5" wide x 10.25" deep 15.7lbs

Dara Tesse

Inspiration for my Ceramics comes from the beauty of the natural world, particularly the woodlands of my childhood home. Butterflies, birds, insects, and flowers are recurring motifs in my work. I am interested in how nature can act as a metaphor, for instance, how to personify hope, aging, the seasons, etc. Using the human head as a foundation, the flora and fauna serve as adornment, transforming into hair and jewelry. I sculpt the form, detail, and colors of creatures with an eye towards accurate representation, but these realistic elements transform into a surrealistic, fairytale-like whole.

“Woodland Nymph” is a personification of the autumn of one’s life, inspired by the woodlands of my childhood home. It is one of a series of four busts representing each of the four seasons. The creatures and flowers serve as adornment to the human form, transforming into hair and jewelry.
