Capitol Hall

Capitol Hall provides housing for men and women who are vulnerable to homelessness because of their age, income, or disability. A 10-story building, it comprises 202 single-room occupancy (SRO) units, offices and community space. Our staff provides daily meals, case management, recreational activities, holiday celebrations, 24 hour/7 day per week front desk security and more, while keeping tenant privacy and independence paramount.

Developed by the Goddard Riverside Settlement Housing Fund and the West 87th Street Block Association beginning in the late 1970s, Capitol Hall was one of the first supportive housing residences in New York City.

Charles Grodin remembers Capitol Hall:
“I lived in your building over fifty years ago, long before it became an SRO. I visited recently, and my room 410 has been enlarged. A second window has been added, and my window which looked at an airshaft andbricks about ten feet away now looks at the interior of a courtyard. My bathroom which was next door was shared with others, which it still is. So, I had no window, no toilet, no stove, no hot plate allowed. I also had no problem with any of it, because I was focused on getting good at something — which I did. I deeply hope all of you living there now are doing that as well.”
