Homeless Adults

For homeless adults living on the streets and in the parks of Manhattan, Goddard Riverside offers a path indoors.

As the lead agency of the six-partner Manhattan Outreach Consotium, Goddard Riveriside took on the responsibility to manage the citywide initiative in Manhattan to provide swift housing for adults who have been homeless for the longest periods.

Goddard Riverside has been a pioneer in developing programs to assist homeless people on the path to stability and permanent housing. In 1979, Goddard Riverside established one of New York City’s first mobile street outreach teams. We provide for immediate needs with medical and psychiatric care, food and shelter and offer assistance at every step toward a better life.

Today our programs for homeless people include outreach, a psychosocial day program, a MICA Network, a housing placement team, transitional and permanent supportive housing, vocational training and job placement. Over the years, Goddard Riverside has developed an expertise working with severe and persistent mental illness, including mentally ill chemically addicted (MICA) individuals, who have been living outdoors for a long period of time.

The Other Place provides those individuals who are currently living on the streets, as well as those who have been housed, a place to congregate during the day with access to meals, socialization groups and an opportunity to receive supportive services from other Goddard Riverside staff who provide life skills training and creative arts therapy. TOP Opportunities offers job training and placement and is the venue for two businesses: a horticulture service, Green Keepers;, and a mailing service that employs formerly homeless adults. Safe Haven, a temporary residence, provides intensive support to those seeking permanent housing. ACT (Assertive Community Treatment) Team is a unique model of mobile mental health treatment for clients who suffer from severe mental illness, many of whom are or have been homeless. Goddard Riverside also operates four permanent supportive housing facilities.

At Goddard Riverside, homeless men and women find the support, resources, and treatment they need to heal from years of isolate life on the streets, achieve permanent housing, and become active members of the community. Clients can progress at their own speed without having to be referred to different agencies for each service. They build bonds of warmth and trust with our staff, which increases their willingness to accept help.
