The Star Learning Center provides one-to-one tutoring to low-income students in grades 2-12 who need assistance with school subjects. Located on West 84th Street, Star is equipped with an extensive resource center, a well stocked library, nine computers for student use, and a lounge area. The goal of the program is to help each child improve their academic skills and to foster a positive attitude towards school and learning. Star meets the need for effective and affordable tutoring for students by placing a trusted mentor in each youngster’s life, someone who believes in them and their potential.
The tutors at Star are wonderful volunteers who come from all walks of life. They are matched individually with a student and receive training and support from our educational staff. Each child receives two hours of individual tutoring each week in the school subjects that they are struggling with. While academics are the major focus of Star Learning Center, we are also concerned about all aspects of the child and what they think about school and their futures. This makes our program special and differentiates it from most other tutoring programs.
Unlike some programs that charge up to $2,000 or more per year, Star Learning Center charges a modest registration fee of $60 per semester for the school year program, and $30 for our six-week summer program. There is no additional charge for tutoring and this small amount helps us with some of the costs of the center. However, no young person will ever be turned away due to the inability to pay. We are proud to say that Star serves more than 300 students each year.
