Musical Evenings

For over three decades, Goddard Riverside has hosted a series of Musical Evenings featuring outstanding musicians, both world-renowned virtuosos and talented young artists. These concerts feature classical and modern chamber music and are held in private homes.

Nicholas Canellakis and Michael Brown, piano
Monday, January 23, 2012 at 8:00 P.M.

Nicholas Canellakis is currently on the faculty of the Manhattan School of Music Precollege and is a member of Chamber Music Society Two. He was a founding member of the Vertigo String Quartet, which received First Prize in the Musicatri International Competition in Italy. Michael Brown is the First Prize Winner of the 2010 Concert Artists Guild Victor Elmaleh Competition. He was hailed by The New York Times as a “vividly characterized and rhythmically free-spirited” pianist. In addition to performing regularly as a soloist, Mr. Brown is also an accomplished composer.

Tara Helen O’Connor, flute and Daniel Phillips, violin

Tara Helen O’Connor  is winner of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a two-time Grammy nominee.  She was the first wind player to participate in the Chamber Music Society Two program and is now an Artist of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. Daniel Phillips has performed as soloist with many of the country’s leading symphony orchestras and is a co-founder of the 20 year old Orion String Quartet, which serves as the resident quartet of the Chamber Music Society of LincolnCenter.

José Franch-Ballester, clarinet and Amy Yang, piano

José Franch-Ballester has won First Prize in the 2004 Young Concert Artists International Auditions.  He has also won First Prize in the Competitionof the Cultural Council of Valencia, Spain for three consecutive years. Mr. Franch-Ballester.has appeared throughout Europe and North America as a soloist, recitalist and chamber musician. Amy Yang has collaborated with extraordinary artists including Richard Goode, Ida and Ani Kavafian, David Shifrin, Fred Sherry, Tara Helen O’connor and André -Michel Schub among others.

Variation String Trio: Hsin-Yun Huang, viola, Jennifer Koh, violin, and Wilhelmina Smith, cello with Guest Artist Benjamin Hochman, piano
Monday, April 30, 2012 at 7:00 P.M.

Wilhelmina Smith formed the trio in the fall of 2005 and has performed with such musicians as Yo-Yo Ma, Joshua Bell, and Pamela Frank; Hsin-Yun Huang, the youngest winner (at 17) at the Lionel Tertis International Viola competition, is on the faculty at the Juilliard School and the Mannes College of Music; Jennifer Koh has appeared with many symphonies and won many violin competitions, including the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow. Benjamin Hochman is the winner of the 2011 prestigious Avery Fisher Career Grant.

Navah Perlman collaborates frequently in chamber music with Philippe Quint and Zuill Bailey as the Perlman/Quint/Bailey Trio.  Ms. Perlman has performed to critical acclaim in major concert venues throughout North America, Europe and Asia. Philippe Quint is a two -time Grammy Award nominee.  He has performed to audiences in Asia, Australia, Latin America, Africa, Europe and the United States with what The Times(London) describes as his “bravura technique and unflagging energy.
